Existentialism is a modern irrational philosophical trend in the West that has had a widespread and profound influence on post-World War II literary production in France and throughout Eu-rope. Since its publication, John Fowles’s novel The French Lieutenant’s Woman has been regarded as a literary interpretation and figurative illustration of existentialist philosophy. This article aims to explore John Fowles’s existentialist ideas and freedom view in this novel, to analyze the existence and freedom of Sarah, and to elucidate the intrinsic motivation of Fowles’s creative appeal and its important inspiration for the development of contemporary novels.
