%X This paper explores the relationship between inspection and research through the eyes of a person with experience of these practices. It is an account of an individual¡¯s attempt to understand the prescriptive nature of change in education since 1988; to locate a place within that process and try to influence those factors that are changeable and minimize those that are not. Examples are drawn from the writer¡¯s experience of combining roles in the first instance as a teacher-researcher and later as an OFSTED inspector and independent researcher.
