Nominalization is one of the most important features of academic English and other formal written styles, but overusing nominalization will make the article become static, lengthy and abstract, and even lead to the abuse of nominalization, which will eventually cause semantic fuzziness or ambiguity. Based on the 162 academic course papers of undergraduates majoring in finance for three consecutive years, this paper explored whether there was semantic fuzziness or ambiguity caused by overuse of nominalization by L2 learners in academic writing. The results showed that semantic fuzziness or ambiguity caused by overuse of nominalization has the following syntactic and semantic features: 1) successive use of multiple nominalization; 2) nominalization modified by compound premodifiers; 3) nominalization modified by compound postmodifiers; 4) nominalization modified by (multiple) abstract prepositional phrases; 5) nominalization modified by attributive clause(s) with high lexical density or abstract meaning; 6) polysemous nominalization; 7) the crossover of the above six types. %K 名词化,过度使用,句法特征,语义特征
