Disappear from silence, perish in silence. Nobel Prize winner Abdulrazak Gurnah’s Admiring Si-lence and The Last Gift focus on the silence and aphasia of the African diaspora between their hometowns and the countries they emigrate to. Due to the many trials and tribulations such as departure from their homeland, racial discrimination, identity crisis, etc., African diasporas are not only difficult to gain the recognition of others in the countries they have migrated to, but also lose themselves in the separation. Gurnah’s exploration of profound propositions such as the identity of immigrants and refugees, the historical trauma brought about by colonialism, his insight into the situation of refugees in the gap between different cultures, and his description of the alienation and loneliness in the hearts of immigrants, make readers around the world recognize what “home” means to everyone in the postcolonial era.
