A Fable, which won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award in US upon its publication in 1954, represents William Faulkner’s most strenuous effort in the late stage of his writing career. With the background set in the European Front of the First World War, the grand narrative strokes and the numerous characters mostly unnamed endow the work with an appeal of universality typical of moral allegory, which serves to highlight its modernist connotations. Based on a focused study of the special mode of its characterization and the moral significance of its allegorical dimension, this thesis attempts to explore the textual and contextual features of modernity so as to reveal the humanistic values behind the anti-war themes. %K 福克纳,《寓言》,反战主题,权力秩序,道德寓言,现代性
