Considering how to make possible the permanence of those massive structures and to link them to the dynamics of the contemporary cities. For this, the concept of industrial heritage and the growing interest in the theme are presented, due to its articulator potential in the requalification of extensive areas. Subsequently, is accomplished the mapping and diagnosis of the industrial heritage of the IV District of Porto Alegre/RS. Old factories of weaving, metal parts, furniture, medicines, food, as well as brewery, mills and ware houses area identified. It investigates the past and the present of these buildings and observe that many no longer exist or are in a situation of abandonment. Others suffer spontaneous reuse or formal attempts of the same purpose. Thus, it is possible to show the current conjuncture of the industrial heritage in Porto Alegre, the main types of reuse, the quality of interventions and unseen potentialities. This work is the result of the research for the dissertation titled 'Urban Rehabilitation and Industrial Heritage: study of interventions in areas of industrial heritage', under the guidance of Prof. PhD.
