From the perspective of binary opposition, this paper excavates the connotations of The Woman Warrior, the representative work of Maxine Hong Kingston who is a contemporary Chi-nese-American writer by analyzing the characters and plots. The opposition in the characters’ images of the novel is constructed through two conflicts between males and females, Chi-nese-Americans and whites. There are two groups of oppositions in the theme—dream and real-ity, tradition and rebellion. By applying the theory of binary opposition to analyze the oppositions in the novel, this paper intends to reveal how Chinese women in the 20th century fought against the patriarchal society and racial discrimination in silence, which has great practical significance for the treatment of gender, racial and cross-cultural issues in the context of globalization. Meanwhile, applying the traditional classical linguistics theory to the modern female literary works not only builds a bridge between the two disciplines, but also promotes the further development of the literary research theories.
