%0 Journal Article %T VIENNA IMPRESSIONS OF EVL£¿YA £¿ELEB£¿ AND HIS PERSPECTIVE TOWARD VISUAL ARTS %A Adil Alper BAKICI %J - %D 2019 %X In this study, it was investigated what the visual arts called ¡®Freng-pesend¡¯ which were observed during Vienna journey of Evliya £¿elebi means to an Ottoman traveler. Furthermore, it was examined to what extent Evliya £¿elebi¡¯s perspective toward visual art was accepted within his own culture. Evliya £¿elebi provides some information with the depictions and stories about the visual art works of his age to his audience in some parts of his ¡®Book of Travels¡¯. Among all information, the European visual arts depicted as ¡®Freng-pesend¡¯ by Evliya £¿elebi which were observed during Evliya £¿elebi¡¯s Vienna trip occurred with a mission under the head of Kara Mehmed Pasha during peace period called ¡®dar-¨¹l sulh¡¯ by Evliya £¿elebi were included. Evliya £¿elebi defines the art works that he observed in Habsburg, which is an ¡®infidel¡¯ country to him, via comparison technique with the artists from his own society and their works. The common point of the texts is that they form within a belief framework. Evliya £¿elebi not only depicts these visual art works and mechanical development via the concepts ¡®acayip-¨¹l garaib¡¯ and ¡®Freng-pesend¡¯ but he also criticizes his own society having prejudices about the art. These texts are written in the contexts of ¡®real¡¯ and ¡®fiction¡¯ in the style of ¡®Book of Travels¡¯.
