%T THE CONCEPT OF SEB¡®¨¹¡¯L-MES£¿N£¿ IN OTTOMAN POETRY AND ITS FRAME OF MEANING

%X Ottoman poetry has a structure that allows it to be examined on multiple layers of meaning. This situation is possible through the used words having associations to various meanings. Thus, couplets can be written to purport multiple meanings, enabling poets to present the power of the art. In the study, the concept of seb¡®¨¹¡¯l-mesan£¿ that is used in Ottoman poetry has been examined, and different meanings the concept gained in Turkish poetry have been evaluated. Primarily, it has been discussed the approaches on the dictation of the term and the reasons behind these. Then, the expression of seb¡®¨¹¡¯l-mesan£¿ in Qur'an has been explained. It has been attempted to analyze the diversity in significance of the concept in Qur'an with the help of different tafsirs and meanings, and to determine the frame of meaning of the composing words. The use of seb¡®¨¹¡¯l-mesan£¿ by the Prophet Muhammad has also been discussed. The number ¡°7¡± and seb¡®¨¹¡¯l-mesan£¿ have particular importance in Hurufism. Firstly, the use and the assigned meanings of the number ¡°7¡± and seb¡®¨¹¡¯l-mesan£¿ in Hurufism have been defined. The use of the concept has been examined in the poems written from 14th to 19th century. Similarities and differences have been tried to be exhibited by comparing the meanings attributed to the concept by Hurufi poets and the use of the concept by poets who weren't affiliated to Hurufism. It is attempted to determine the acquired meanings of seb¡®¨¹¡¯l-mesan£¿ in the examples investigated
