The author tries to explain the acerbity and frivolity of his generation through his experiences in line with his intellectual goals. He shines a light upon the monotonous modernisation causing the deterioration of humanitarian values and hindrance on human relations. He probes into the selfish and turbulent actions of those who are unloved and became hooked on materialism and sexuality in the context of the new order. He also discusses the divine judgement of the inequality between people, communal and sexual liberalism. According to Houellebecq, living according to the moral laws or frivolling around brings nothing but earthly failures and vanity. The author, the main character, who aged by his numerous experiences, realises the meaninglessness of the narrowness of the limits of his freedom and his mortal life, and acknowledges that he will indeed fall defeated in the face of death. His consciousness, radiating with knowledge and experience, pushes him to deny everything and his disappointments cast him into despair. This acknowledgement of frivolity of life makes him play the absurdity game. The main character who struggles between harmony and absurdity lives his temporary existence out in an ever expanding war inside this complex game.
