%0 Journal Article %T A Banker in the 19TH Century Galata: Jacques All¨¦on, the Moneychanger of Imperial Mint and Embassies %A Nursel Manav %J - %D 2018 %X Examining the activities of Galata bankers in the Ottoman Empire and thus define their place in the economy is substantial for correct inference on fiscal history. This group of people first started as moneychangers and later became the Galata bankers. It is necessary to investigate their transactions, fiscal relations, role in the iltizam system, how much of domestic borrowing they occupy and their intermediary role in trade with the West. To fully determine the activities of Galata bankers in the economy, it is essential to clarify the commercial relations of each banker both with the Ministry of Finance and the market. Jacques All¨¦on of France is among the top of 19th century Galata bankers. Nevertheless, no private study has been carried out to examine his commercial and financial affairs as a banker. Furthermore, limited information regarding his private life is partially incorrect. This study aims to examine the important stages in All¨¦on¡¯s relation with Ministry of Finance which began in the 1820s as well as to correct false information regarding his private life. His financial operations has been left in the dark with the exceptions of stabilising the exchange rate and his role in the establishment of Dersaadet Bank. Soon after he founded his own company in Galata, he took on the responsibility of moneychanging for embassies and Imperial Mint, a position he fulfilled for a long time.
