%T Between The City and the Neighborhood Culture Fikirtepe

%X In Turkey, as a result of internal migration experienced with the process of industrialization, crooked and unplanned housing, or squatters, has been begun to be seen in the cities. On the one hand, this phenomenon leads to negatively impact on the culture of the city and on the other hand, to the emergence of new problems in security, health and social fields in these regions. Together with the urbanization, the structure of neighborhood is also important from the perspectives of interactions and relations among people. Therefore, within the context of neighborhood and street concepts, it is necessary to examine the dimension of social relations within the boundaries of the neighborhood. In this study, social networks, neighborhood relations and types of living conditions of children and adults in Fikirtepe neighborhood have been examined. In addition, the history of Istanbul Fikirtepe neighborhood in the context of urban transformation project, its position in Istanbul, the social and cultural characteristics of the people living in that region are also defined. Urban renewal projects in Turkey havee been seen more as an attempt of urban renewal and change in which that renewal nd change take places not only in the social fabric, but also in the urban one. Fikirtepe squatter region after the transformation, it has been planned that only high-income people rather than lower and middle-income ones could stay there. People living in the region are worried that the transformation will not only affect the physical structure of the region, but also its social and cultural motives since they cannot live in Fikirtepe after the transformation. Therefore, in our study, the view of Fikirtepe people about the transformation is tried to be reflected by interviewing the people who represent three-generation-living in the region. Thus, the question of how the neighborhood culture and identity would be affected in historical and sociological context has been answered because after the transformation project in the neighborhood, some changes and resolutions have been seen. From the observations and interviews, the relations between the neighborhoods have already started to differentiate.
