%T A Comparative Translation Analysis in the Context of Re-translation: A Case Study of Edgar Allan Poe¡¯s ¡°The Cask of Amontillado¡± Short Story

%X This study aims to make a comparative analysis of a source text consisting of a short story and its translations at different times in the context of re-translation. For this purpose, six different Turkish translations of the short story ¡°The Cask of Amontillado¡±, which was written and published in 1846 by Edgar Allan Poe, one of the most eminent figures of American literature have been examined. Of the six examined translations, two were published in 1982 and 1985, while The other four translations were published in 2016 (two of them) and 2018 (the remaining two). In the comparison process of the translations, two concepts, namely ¡°adequacy¡± and ¡°acceptibility¡± were considered as the main criteria, which were arose from the target oriented translation theory of Gideon Toury. Sentences or clauses which were chosen for this purpose were fit to be assessed according to framework of the view by Koskinen, who claimes that re-translations are ¡°closer¡± to the original¡±, ¡°truer¡± and ¡°more complete¡±. It is considered that the analysis of the findings obtained from comparative analysis of the source text with its translations on the basis of translators¡¯ decisions will reveal whether the translations are ¡°adequate¡± or ¡°acceptible¡±. By doing so, we will be able to find out whichtranslated texts seem to stand closer to the source or to target texts. It is expected that the findings obtained at the end of the study would reflect the responses of the translators against the issues confronted during the translation process by the very nature of translation itself. Thus we can find out if there are any changes in the translators¡¯ decisions over a period of time. According to the findings it has been found that some of re-translations stand close to the source text while the others stand close to the target text
