%0 Journal Article %T CENSUS BOOKS IN THE EXAMPLE OF SU£¿EHRI GENERAL CENSUS (1835-1843) %J - %D 2018 %X Population and estate kind of registers were made as ¡°population and estate tahrirs¡± in the 15th and 16th centuries in the Ottoman Empire. These registers were done regularly for a long time, but they lost the old order in time. The first general census was made in the Ottoman Empire in the period of Sultan Mahmud II. The general census was practiced first in Istanbul and later in the other parts of the state. In Su£¿ehri nahiyesi, where now is one of the districts in Sivas and in the Ottoman times was belonged to Karahisar-£¿ £¿arki sanjak, a general census including the villages was carried on and registered in a book. In this study, Su£¿ehri in particular, the information is given about general census and registers.
