%0 Journal Article %T A Role of Waqfs in Ottoman Water Structures: Financing of Facility, Repair and Service Expenses %A Said £¿zt¨¹rk %J - %D 2019 %X Establishment of facilities for water supply, repair, and fulfilment of water services has been one of the main areas of activity of the waqfs. Thanks to the support of waqf resources, the function of the water structures continued for many centuries. Investments requiring large budgets were made for the solution of water issue by the Ottoman sultans, sultanas, the upper bureaucracy and the people of all walks of society. Thus, waterways, arches, fountains and many other water structures were built in most Ottoman cities, particularly in Istanbul. In order to ensure the sustainability of the water structures and services, waqfs have been established to provide resources. Not only the cost of building facilities for water supply and their repair but also the wages of the workers employed for water services have been covered by the funds of the waqfs.
