%X Besim £¿mer Pasha (Akal£¿n), born in Istanbul on July 1, 1862. He studied as a military student at Mekteb-i T£¿bbiye-i Adliye-i £¿ahane (the Imperial Medical School). He made great contributions to modern medicine through his works and education. He contributed to the training of thousands of physicians owing to his courses in the Faculty of Medicine. He has research on methods to prevent the onset or aggravation of diseases. This study focuses on his work ¡°¨¹z¨¹m ve ¨¹z¨¹m ile Tedavi (Grape and Treatment by Grape)¡±, which is about preventive medicine and the importance of nutrition for life protection in general as well as the use of grape in treatment of various diseases. The work consists of 78 pages. The fourth edition was printed at Istanbul Ahmet Ihsan Printing House in 1933. The book provides a historical overview of grape and mentions the types of grapes. Then it goes on with how to consume grape, the food and drinks made of this fruit, how to preserve these food and drinks, and how to consume them for medical treatment purposes. Grape has been an ingredient of remedies prepared to cure illnesses in many ancient civilizations. As grape has been used historically for medical purposes, Dr. Besim £¿mer Akal£¿n¡¯s book involves important information for today¡¯s medical practices as well
