%T SOCIAL MEDIA AS AN ELEMENT IN HEALTH COMMUNICATION: EXAMINATION OF HEALTH RELATED NEWS IN A SOCIAL CONTENT PLATFORM

%X Health communication is a discipline that has gained importance in Turkey in recent years as it is in most countries, and the work on this area is emphasized. Thanks to developing technology, the mass media preferred by the individuals also changed. With the ease of Internet access, social media and its social content platforms, a derivative of it, have also become an important element in health communication. Being the first social content platform established in Turkey, Onedio is a popular site. In this study, 4276 health related news shared in Onedio between May 2012 and July 2017 were examined and classified according to the topics and date ranges they shared and evaluated by content analysis. According to the analysis results, 16 categories were formed and the most common categories were news on nutrition-diet-obesity (12.9%) and recommendations for healthy life (12%). Nearly one-third of the news (36.6%) was shared in 2013. After 2014, there was a sharp decline in the number of news items. When news about the health related announcements and legislative regulation news were examined, it was found that about 45.6% of the 309 news items were not mentioned the references, 12.6% were missing contents, 78.6% were shared by any member and 87.7% were about Turkey agenda. Again, the majority of the news in this category was received from domestic news agencies (64%). Finally, it has been determined that there are news items that are repeated or not related to health in the health news category. In the light of these results, it is thought that the controls of such social content platforms which are not informal, which have too many followers and can affect the masses, should be inspected and various regulations should be made about them
