%0 Journal Article %T The Impacts of University on Population Growth and Inter Provincial Migrations: The Case of £¿anakkale %A £¿evket I£¿IK %J - %D 2018 %X Particularly after 1990 due to the increase in the number of universities in Turkey, the number of students in higher education has increased. For this reason, "education" has become an important cause of migration especially in population movements between provinces. This situation caused significant changes in both the migration data and urban populations as well as in the economic structure of the urban centers where the universities were located. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of £¿anakkale Onsekiz Mart University, which was founded in 1992, on the net migration and net migration rates of £¿anakkale. Another aim of the study is to determine which changes have occured in the geographical distribution of net migrations in £¿anakkale. In the study, migration data based on permanent residence change were used for 1975-2000, and for after 2008 Address Based Population Registration System (ABPRS) migration data were used. Today, £¿anakkale Onsekiz Mart University, which has more than 50 thousand students, has created a rapid population increase in the province center since its foundation in 1992, and has transformed £¿anakkale from an emigration to immigration province. In the province of £¿anakkale, while the population growth rate declined between 1975-1990, it has increased continuously since 1990. The net migration rate, which was around -5 per thousand before 1990, increased to 27.4 per thousand in the period 1995-2000, to 29.7 per thousand in 2008-2012 period and to 50.5 per thousand in 2013-2017 period. These data indicate that £¿anakkale recorded significant increases in both emigration and immigration after 1990 when the University was established. The net migration balance, which is negative for the province, turned positive with big differences. This process has resulted in dramatic changes in the geographical distribution of the net migration of £¿anakkale. The province of £¿anakkale has lost its population to the Aegean Region especially to the Marmara Region until 1990 and after 1995 it has received a net migration from all regions of Turkey. Most of these migrations are from the provinces of Marmara Region, especially with the effects of Istanbul province %K ¨¹niversite %K n¨¹fus art£¿£¿£¿ %K kentle£¿me %K i£¿ g£¿£¿ler %K £¿anakkale %U http://dergipark.org.tr/ecd/issue/41304/499204
