%0 Journal Article %T A Sufi¡¯s Interpretation of £¿ad¨©th: The Case of Ibn £¿Arab¨© and the £¿ad¨©ths about Holding up the hands during the prayer (Raf¡® al-yadain) %A Mehmet Ayhan %J - %D 2019 %X This paper studies the understanding and interpretation of a specific £¿ad¨©th by Muhy al-d¨©n Ibn £¿Arab¨© . His view on the £¿ad¨©thabout ¡®holding up the hands during £¿al¨¡h(raf¡® al-yadain)¡¯ is explained in the light of his well-known book, Fut¨±£¿¨¡t al-Makkiyya. Besides the general knowledge and terminology of fiqhand £¿ad¨©th, Ibn £¿Arab¨© also utilized his unique methods and methodologies of ta£¿awwufto interpret the £¿ad¨©th. It is concluded that in interpretation of a £¿ad¨©th, Ibn £¿Arab¨© differed from other scholars as he skillfully used these three areas of knowledge (fiqh, £¿ad¨©th, and ta£¿awwuf) as a trivet and by synthesizing these three sciences, he approached to the issue in a comprehensive way. The dreams, one of Ibn £¿Arab¨©¡¯s special methods and one of Sufism¡¯s wisdom sources, are presented within the context of the interpretation of £¿ad¨©th. While Ibn £¿Arab¨© was inspired the £¿ad¨©thby a dream, he also stated its place and status in £¿ad¨©th sources.
