There is a great need for in-depth studies to broaden this scope. Known as a branch of Shia, the Zaidiyyah is a part of this rich tradition and has continued its existence to this day. One of the questions that need to be answered in understanding and interpreting the hadiths is ¡°As a living tradition how does Zaidiyyah approach to interpreting the hadiths?¡±. The sole purpose of this paper is to provide an answer to this very question. We limits the scope by one person who is Ahmad b. S¨¹leiman because of his remarkable and exciting work on hadith interpretation. His two-volume work contains 2672 hadiths arranged by Usulu¡¯l ahkam fiqh subjects. The exciting part of the work is the presence of short evaluations on the aforementioned hadiths. These expressions give the impression of not having been randomly chosen and not having been used excessively which implies that Imam Ahmad has a terminology based on interpretation. Based on these expressions of Ahmad b. Suleiman, it is possible to surmise his views and stance with regards to his understanding of the hadiths. Because these expressions indicate that he is not content with merely the literal meaning of the hadiths and that he is in search for a meaning beyond the apparent. In conclusion, Ahmad b. Suleiman¡¯s interpretations demonstrate his intention to interpret the hadiths with regards to their purpose rather than their literal meaning. In making these interpretations, he sometimes relies on the Qur'an, other hadiths, ijma, the basic principles of the religion, nesh and features originating from language itself.
