%T Investigation of the Value Tendencies of Adolescents and the Relation between Value Tendencies and Internet Addiction

%X The purpose of the present study was to reveal which of the values¡¯ effects were felt most by adolescents in their lives and whether different variables caused changes in their value preferences. Evaluating the relations between the adolescent¡¯s internet addiction levels and value tendencies formed another purpose of this study. There has not been found any study carried out in Turkey dealing the relation between the value tendencies of adolescents and internet addiction. It has been thought that investigating which values are most influential on adolescents and their relations with internet addiction will lend assistance to the efforts to prevent internet addiction. A total of 276 high school students including 134 (48,6%) females and 142 (51,4%) males studying at five different high schools in Afyonkarahisar province took part in the study. The data were collected using ¡°Schwartz Value Inventory¡± and ¡°Young¡¯s Internet Addiction Test-Short Form¡±. According to the findings obtained in the research in which T-test, One way ANOVA and Pearson's Moments Multiplication Correlation Technique were used in terms of gender, male students had a high opinion of the values of ¡°power, hedonism, and stimulation¡± while female students cared more about the values of ¡°universalism, conformity¡±. Value sequence of the sample group was identified as ¡°piety, benevolence, security, self-direction, universalism, conformity, achievement, tradition, stimulation, power, and hedonism.¡± In the research, positive and significant relationships were found between internet addiction and values of ¡°power, hedonism, and stimulation¡±; but negative and significant relationships were detected among the values ¡°universalism, benevolence, tradition, conformity, and piety.
