%0 Journal Article %T The Intellectual Nakba and the Occupation of Bayt al-Maqdis %A Khalid El-Awaisi %J - %D 2019 %X Numerous catastrophes have consecutively befallen within the last century in the Holy Land. The Nakba or catastrophe is connected in the collective memory to the formation of the Zionist state in Palestine in 1948. However, the Nakba of the occupation of this land can be traced back thirty years earlier and namely to the British occupation in 1917 with the help of some of their Arab allies amongst others. Prior to the occupation of the land, the minds were occupied in what could be called the Intellectual Nakba or crisis in knowledge. This was manifested through coercive persuasion in the reshaping of identities and concepts. Thus radically changing and manipulating the thoughts of the local inhabitants turning the enemy into a friend, and one¡¯s own brethren into a foe. This article deals with the idea of the Intellectual Nakba and how the mind was occupied before the land, as well as tracing the emergence of the term ¡°Nakba¡± and its early use. This article thus diagnoses and presents the symptoms of this phenomenon by extrapolating instances of its manifestation. Consequently, tracing how countless people were deceived into applauding and welcoming the colonialist occupation of their own lands before being awaken to the existential threat it poses on their presence in their land and eventually revolting and fighting against the colonisers. The author concludes that the occupation of the land was a consequence to the occupation of the mind.
