%T The Retrospective Analysis of Patients Who Underwent Thyroidectomy

%X Purpose: Thyroid disease is a very common disease in society. Most of this disease is a nodular goiter. Treatment of benign and malignant lesions is total thyroidectomy. The aim of the this study will evaluate retrospectively for the patients who underwent thyroidectomy operation to age, gender, mean duration of operation, mean length of hospital stay, complication rate, mortality rate, benign and malignant rates with pathology results and distribution of malignancy types with will be evaluated retrospectively for the patients who underwent this thyroidectomy operation. Material and Methods:1133 patients who underwent thyroidectomy in Ankara Atatš¹rk Training and Research Hospital between March 1992 and February 2004 and 1133 patients who underwent thyroidectomy in Samsun Education and Research Hospital between January 2008 and February 2013 were retrospectively evaluated. Results:367(16,2%) of 2266 patients were male, 1899(83,8%) were female. The median age of patients was 44,6 years (M:47,9 F:44). The median age of malign patients 48,1 years(M:54,7 F:46,8). The mean duration of operation was 95.6 min and the mean duration of malignant pathological diagnosis was 105.2min. Patients' length of hospital stay was 3.3 days. 11 patients (0.49%) were re-operated due to hematoma. Tracheostomy was performed in 3 patients (0.1%) because of bilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy. The pathology report of 160 patients (7.06%) was reported as malignancy (M: F= 1/5).The mortality rate was 0.08%. Conclusion: In this study, the distribution of patients who applied thyroidectomy in the regions where the data were collected and the histopathological diagnosis of malignant diseases were found similar to the literature. However, malignant numbers after thyroidectomy were found to be lower than the literature. For this reason, patients who underwent thyroidectomy for malignant conditions by surgeons should be more selective for preoperative evaluation and information about the disease should be explained in detail
