%0 Journal Article %T Diotima, Teacher of Socrates %A Esra £¿a£¿r£¿ Mutlu %J - %D 2018 %X In Plato¡¯s Symposium, Diotima promises to teach Socrates the mysteries of eros. However, the most controversial point superseding her teachings is the fact that she is a woman. For the period when the dialogue was written, she was a female within a male-dominated environment; furthermore, she was claimed to teach something to Socrates, who was considered one of the seven sages. Thus, based on this claim, the commentators interpret Diotima in different ways. Some say that she is a fiction, some say that as a real woman she symbolizes the change in the philosophy of Plato, and some say that Diotima is rather an alter-ego of Socrates and that it is Socrates himself who speaks through her.
