%X Four novel aromatic hydroxy acid (HA) compounds N-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-4ĄŻ-trimellitimide, N-(3-hydroxyphenyl)-4ĄŻ-trimellitimide, N-(5-hydroxynaphthyl)-4ĄŻ-trimellitimide and N-{4ĄŻ-[2-(4-hydroxyph- enyl) isopropyl phenyl]}-4ĄŻĄŻ-trimellitimide are synthesized through nucleophilic substitution reaction of trimelitic dianhydrides with the corresponding aminophenol/aminonaphthol using polar aprotic solvents. The hydroxy acid compounds are characterized by FT-IR and 1H-NMR spectroscopy.
