We used both qualitative and quantitative methods in devising a street play to enhance knowledge, attitudes and beliefs about mental illness. The formative research enabled the intervention to remain culturally appropriate to the socio-cultural practices of the targeted rural audience. Targeted audiences need to be understood carefully for their beliefs and notions about mental health and sickness.
