%X Whilst mortality is not yet optional, improvements in clinical care in developed countries keep pushing back the boundaries of when and how people die, challenging us as individuals and as societies. Public policy debates are occurring in many Western countries around issues related to end of life care, advance care planning, palliative care, determinations regarding futile treatment, and voluntary assisted dying/euthanasia. These discussions have at times led to an intense public focus on issues of death and dying, and profound policy changes are likely to flow from these debates (1-5)
