EC is the fifth most common cancer and the fourth most frequent cause of cancer-related death in China (1). Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is the main pathological type with 90% of all EC cases in China (2,3). Curative resection is one of the most effective therapies for ESCC. However, the clinical outcome in patients with ESCC has remained far from satisfactory (4).
