Typical carcinoid tumours are found at one end of the wide spectrum of these pathological entities, and at the other, small-cell neuroendocrine carcinomas. Intermediate degrees of differentiation and behaviour define the other neoplasms of this spectrum; atypical carcinoid and large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma. Based on the correlation between histologic differences and clinical prognosis of the patients, the initial classification of these tumours established in 1982 by the World Health Organization (WHO) (1) has been modified several times %U http://jtd.amegroups.com/article/view/16643/html
