The word “Junyi (military surgeon)” is confirmed to first appear in an imperial military edict during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms. Its implication changed with the history moving forward. Different from the military surgeon in modern times which refers to an occupation, “Junyi” in the ancient Chinese history means a doctor going along with army who was temporary, part-time and out of the military system. The latter was not a full-time job serving the army. We should not use this word randomly in the study of ancient military medical history. We hope to draw an academic concern. The real “military surgeon” should appear in the Beiyang Imperial Navy Fleet in 1888 when our country was in the late Qing Dynasty 130 years ago
