The origin and core of the “Historikerstreit”—the appropriate historical positioning of Hitler and his third empire—has been an unavoidable issue in Germany and even worldwide since the end of World War II, and to a certain extent, this has influenced the development of German political culture and history. Through this controversy, we can see the decline of historicism of German history. For the Federal Republic of Germany, this debate also had strong practical significance, because it was related to the historical consciousness and national identity of Federal Germany. In addition, the debate also involves the role of historians and historians in the present. Therefore, whether from an academic perspective or a practical perspective, this controversy is crucial and deserves our careful investigation.
