The rise of the Internet brought up a debate about its role in eroding or strengthening national identity. This paper empirically explored the Internet’s impacts on social context in which national identity is formed. Using the data from the World Values Survey, this paper carried out multilevel analyses with 47,078 respondents in 33 countries. The results illustrated two conclusions. First, citizen participation through the Internet neutralizes the challenges resulting from information distribution through the Internet. Second, the Internet participation leads to Fukuyama’s (1989) prediction about the end of history, arguing that civic nationalism would eventually replace ethnic nationalism and become the fnal stage of ideological evolution in human history
