The root morphological and physiological properties were measured on the 20th, 40th, 60th, 80th and 100th day, respectively after seeding. The results showed that the seed-base technique significantly increased root tips, surface area, root density (p<0.05) during the experimental period, but the average diameter was smaller than ordinary container of P. orientalis. Furthermore, the seed-base technique could also significantly improve the root activity, soluble sugar and soluble protein contents (p<0.05). Root morphological properties, such as root tips, root surface area and root density had positive correlation with root physiological characteristics, i.e. root activity, root soluble sugar and root soluble protein for the both seedlings(p<0.05). However, average root diameter of seed-base technique had no significant relationships with root density and root soluble protein. The stepwise regression analysis indicated that root surface area played a decisive role for the variations of root activity of seed-base seedlings. Root tip numbers played decisive effects for root activity, root soluble sugar and root soluble protein %K
