The results showed:(a) The associations between teacher-student relationship quality and students' internalizing and externalizing problems were stronger than those between students' adjustment difficulties and parent-child relationships and peer relationships; (b) Self-esteem served as a linking mechanism that explained the associations of parent-child, teach-student, and peer relationships with internalizing problems but not with externalizing problems. (c) Gender differences emerged such that self-esteem mediated the link between peer relationships and girls' internalizing problems but not boys' internalizing problems.
