Does “recording every spike from every neuron” make sense?
Nerve cells (neurons) generate electrical impulses (spikes/action potentials) upon stimulation. While these “all or none” spikes look extremely similar in waveforms, their firing patterns may be rather changeable, depending on a variety of factors, including stimulus parameters, activities of other neurons, and so on. Moreover, even for a specific neuron the features of its activity could be largely and precisely modified during development to adapt to the environment. Given the above facts, the author argues that it should be cautious in citing the phrase “record every spike from every neuron” to highlight the “Brain Activity Mapping” Project and any possible misunderstanding this expression might induce in the public should be avoided. We need to come to an understanding that it is not only infeasible, but also meaningless to“record every spike from every neuron” even in a local circuit, let alone in the brain %K
