%X GeologicalandpaleontologicalstudiesofRoteIslandhaveproventhatthedistributionoftheMeso-zoicrocks(especiallyTriassic,Jurassic,andCreta-ceous)isbroaderthanwasthoughtbypreviouswork-ers.ThePaleozoicrocksarenotexposed,butsomefossilscollectedfromthesurfacesuggestthatsuchrocksarepresentdeepdowninthesubsurfaceofthisisland.Thefossilswerebroughttothesurfacealongwiththeothermaterialsbymudvolcanoeswhicharecommonontheisland.
