CHEUNG %A Sam S.Y.CHIK %A SUN Ya-dong %J 地球学报 %D 2012 %R 10.3975/cagsb.2012.s1.02 %X TheCimmerianterraneformsanalmostunbrokenchainstretching>13,500km,fromcentralsouthernEuropetowesternIndonesia,viaSEEurope,theMiddleEast,Afghanistan,Tibet,SWChinaandMyanmar.Ar-guably,itisEarth’smostspectacularexampleofa“sliver”terrane,dwarfinginsizemorerecentlydevel-opedexamples,forinstancethePalawanBlockinthewesternPhilippines,andtheLordHoweRiseintheTasmanSea.Thepresentationwillfirstoutlinethein-triguinggeologicalfeaturesassociatedwiththisuniquetectonicentity.Followingthat,recentlyobtainedresultsfollowingpaleomagneticinvestigationsoftwolowerPermianrift-relatedbasaltsuiteswillbesummarized(AborVolcanicsinnortheasternIndiaandWoniusiBa-saltsinYunnan,China).Thetwostudiesarepartofalargerprogrammeofongoingresearchaimedatdeducing(I)thegeodynamicconfigurationthatgeneratedtheun-usualriftingsystem,and(II)exactlyhowCimmeriafit-tedagainstGondwanapriortoitsdispersalintheEarlyPermian.ThecriticalunitisBaoshan,whichwefitagainstGondwanawithinanarrowlongitudinalbeltclosetowherenorthernIndiaandnorthwesternAustraliawereonceincloseproximity(Fig.1).Furthermore,wesuggestthatSibumasulaytodirectlytheeast,offshoreofAustralia;QiangtangandLhasaalmostcertainlysattothewest(offnorthernGreaterIndia-SEArabia),butweareuncertainastotheirexactconfiguration.Ourfindingswillbecomparedwithseveralratherdifferentmodelsthathavebeenpublishedinrecentyears.Thenewpa-leomagneticconstrainthighlightstheflexibilityauthorscurrentlyhaveinreconstructingtheregion,principallybecauseoftheoveralllackofsimilarhigh-qualitydatafromthevariousblocks.Weexplainhownewdatacouldresolvetheseambiguities,therebyofferingmorerobustexplanationsforeasternGondwana’slatePaleozoicde-velopment. %K Cimmerianterrane %K Paleomagnetism %K BaoshanBlock %K SibumasuBlock %U http://www.cagsbulletin.com/dqxbcn/ch/reader/view_abstract.aspx?file_no=2012s102&flag=1
