%X Reasonsaregivenfortheintroductionoftwonewstage-namesintheseriesofstepsbywhichthepresentland-surfacehasevolved.ThetermPaoteStageisproposedforthelong-recognizedphaseofaggradation(betweentheTanghsienandFenhoerosionalstages)duringwhichtheRedClaysandhighgravelsaccumulated.TheimportanceoftheChingshuiStagehasnotpreviouslybeenappreciated,butitisnowclearthatanepochoferosionseparatedtheSanmenandMalan(loess)Stagesofaccumulation.WhenDr.AnderssonfirstappliedthetermFenhoStagetothedissectionseenintheChaitangBasin,Dr.V.K.TinghadnotyetdiscoveredtheSanmenbeds.WiththerecognitionthatthesebedswerenotanisolateddepositbutrepresentedadistinctchangeofconditionswhichleftitsmarkwidespreadoverNorthernChina,itbecamenecessarytoestablishtheexactrelationshipbetweentheSanmenandFenhoinWillis'stypearea.
