%0 Journal Article %T BiomolecularPreservationofMioceneFossilLiquidambarfromTiantai,ChinaandClarkia,USA:ImplicationsforPalaeoenvironmentalStudy %A XIAO %A Liang %A *YANG %A Hong %A HE %A Yuli %A HE %A Wenlong %A LI %A Xiangchuan %A GUO %A Junfeng %A HUI %A Kaixuan %J µØÖÊѧ±¨ %P 1076-1087 %D 2015 %X BiomolecularcharacteristicsoffossilLiquidambarfromtheMioceneShengxianFormation,Tiantai,ZhejiangprovinceineasternChinaandMioceneClarkiasediment,Idaho,U.S.A.,areobtainedbymeansofPyrolysis-Gaschromatography-Massspectrometryanalysis(Py-GC-MS).Theirmodernequivalent(Liquidambarformosana)collectedfromNanjing,easternChina,isalsoanalyzedforcomparison.Thetotalionchromatograms(TIC)ofmodernL.formosanaleavesshowsabundantpyrolysatesoflignin,polysaccharide,aliphaticacid,andaminoacid.However,onlyonepolysaccharidemolecule,i.e.,levoglucosan,isretainedinfossilLiquidambarleavesfromthetwoMiocenesiteswiththeTiantaispecimenpossessinghigherintensity.Asexpected,someligninpyrolysatesincludingbenzene,phenol,guaiacol,vinylphenolandtheirderivatives,aredetectedinMioceneTiantaiL.miosinica.However,thelignincomponentswithlargemolecularweightotherthanbenzeneandphenolcompounds,areabsentinMioceneClarkiaL.pachyphyllum.Abundantpristeneandhomologousseriesofn-alk-1-ene/n-alkanepairswithalongretentiontimeareshowninpyrogramsofbothTiantaiandClarkiafossils.BaseduponourPy-GC-MSdata,themolecularpreservationintheseLiquidambarleafsamplescanberankedasthefollowing(fromhightolowqualityrespectively):modernsample>Tiantaisample>Clarkiasample.Vinylphenol,animportantcompound,ispresentinmodernandTiantaiLiquidambarleaves,whileabsentinClarkiasample,implyingthatvinylphenolmaybesourcedfromligninforLiquidambarleaves.Ourdatasupportthehypothesisofinsitupolymerizationfortheoriginoflong-chainhomologousseriesofn-alk-1-ene/n-alkanepairsasleafalterationproducts.Ourdatahaveimplicationsoftheimpactofleafdegradationtowardbiasesforpalaeoenvironmentalreconstructionusingstablecarbonisotopeoffossilplants,andsuggesttheimportanceofevaluatingmolecularpreservationoffossilleaftissuespriortotheapplicationofcarbonisotopecompositionsoffossilleaves. %K Liquidambar %K Py-GC-MS %K Miocene %K Biomolecules %K palaeoenvironment %U http://www.geojournals.cn/dzxb/ch/reader/view_abstract.aspx?file_no=201504002&flag=1
