%0 Journal Article %T Populationsurveyandconservationassessmentofthegloballythreatenedcheerpheasant(Catreuswallichi)inJhelumValley,AzadKashmir,Pakistan %A Muhammad Naeem AWAN %A Hassan ALI %A David Charles LEE %J 动物学研究 %P 338-345 %D 2014 %R 10.13918/j.issn.2095-8137.2014.4.338 %X ThecheerpheasantCatreuswallichiisagloballythreatenedspeciesthatinhabitsthewesternHimalayas.Thoughitiswellestablishedthatthespeciesisthreatenedanditsnumbersdeclining,updateddefinitiveestimatesarelacking,soin2011,weconductedasurveytoassessthedensity,populationsize,andthreatstothespeciesinJhelumvalley,AzadKashmir,whichholdsthelargestknownpopulationofcheerpheasantsinPakistan.Weconducteddawncallcountsurveysat17pointsclusteredinthreesurveyzonesofthevalley,11ofwhichhadearlierbeenusedfora2002-2003surveyofthebirds.Overthecourseofoursurvey,113birdswererecorded.Meandensityofcheerpheasantinthevalleywasestimatedat11.8±6.47pairsperkm2,withsignificantdifferencesintermsofbothcountsandestimateddensityofcheerweresignificantlydifferentacrossthethreesurveyzones,withthehighestintheChinariregionandthelowest,thatistheareawithnorecordedsightingsofthepheasants,inGariDoppata.Thetotalbreedingpopulationofcheerpheasantsisestimatedtobesome2490pairs,thoughthisdoesnotconsidertheactualareaofoccupancyinthestudyarea.Onthewhole,morecheerpheasantswererecordedinthissurveythanfromthesamepointsin2002-2003,indicatingsomesuccessinpopulationgrowth.Unfortunately,increasinghumansettlement,fires,livestockgrazing,hunting,andthecollectionofnon-timberforestproductscontinuetothreatenthepopulationofcheerintheJhelumvalley.Tomitigatethesepotentialimpacts,somedegreeofsiteprotectionshouldberequiredfortheconservationofcheerpheasantsinPakistan,andmoreeffectivemonitoringofthespeciesisclearlyneeded. %K Abundance %K Habitatanalysis %K CheerPheasant %K Jhelumvalley %K Pakistan %U http://www.zoores.ac.cn/CN/abstract/abstract3503.shtml
