%X ThecheerpheasantCatreuswallichiisagloballythreatenedspeciesthatinhabitsthewesternHimalayas.Thoughitiswellestablishedthatthespeciesisthreatenedanditsnumbersdeclining,updateddefinitiveestimatesarelacking,soin2011,weconductedasurveytoassessthedensity,populationsize,andthreatstothespeciesinJhelumvalley,AzadKashmir,whichholdsthelargestknownpopulationofcheerpheasantsinPakistan.Weconducteddawncallcountsurveysat17pointsclusteredinthreesurveyzonesofthevalley,11ofwhichhadearlierbeenusedfora2002-2003surveyofthebirds.Overthecourseofoursurvey,113birdswererecorded.Meandensityofcheerpheasantinthevalleywasestimatedat11.8±6.47pairsperkm2,withsignificantdifferencesintermsofbothcountsandestimateddensityofcheerweresignificantlydifferentacrossthethreesurveyzones,withthehighestintheChinariregionandthelowest,thatistheareawithnorecordedsightingsofthepheasants,inGariDoppata.Thetotalbreedingpopulationofcheerpheasantsisestimatedtobesome2490pairs,thoughthisdoesnotconsidertheactualareaofoccupancyinthestudyarea.Onthewhole,morecheerpheasantswererecordedinthissurveythanfromthesamepointsin2002-2003,indicatingsomesuccessinpopulationgrowth.Unfortunately,increasinghumansettlement,fires,livestockgrazing,hunting,andthecollectionofnon-timberforestproductscontinuetothreatenthepopulationofcheerintheJhelumvalley.Tomitigatethesepotentialimpacts,somedegreeofsiteprotectionshouldberequiredfortheconservationofcheerpheasantsinPakistan,andmoreeffectivemonitoringofthespeciesisclearlyneeded.
