%X Massaggregationsandmigrationsofmillipedesdespitenumerousattemptstofindcausesfortheiroccurrencesarestillanenigma.Theyhavebeenreportedfrombothsouthernandnorthernhemispherecountries,fromhighlandsandlowlandsofbothtropicalandtemperateregionsandtheycaninvolvespeciesbelongingtotheordersJulidaandSpirobolida,PolydesmidaandGlomerida.Accordingtothemainsuggestionsputforwardinthepast,massoccurrencesinDiplopodaoccur:(1)becauseofalackoffoodandapopulationincreasebeyondsustainablelevels;(2)forthepurposeofreproductionandinordertolocatesuitableovipositionsites;(3)tofindoverwinteringoraestivationsites;(4)becauseofhabitatdisruptionandchangesinthelocalenvironment;(5)asaconsequenceofweatherconditionstheyear(orwinterandspring)before.Arecentoutbreak(November2014)ofamassmigrationofthepolydesmidChamberliniushualienensisWang1956ontheJapaneseIzuIslandofHachijojima300kmtothesouthofTokyogavethisauthoranopportunitytoreviewtheexistingliteratureonmillipedemassmigrationsandtocarryoutadditionalobservationsonthephenomenoninthefieldaswellasthelaboratory.HithertounreportedheavyinfestationswithphoreticdeutonymphsofthemiteHistiostomasp.aswellasdensepopulationsofinternalrhabditidnematodes(Oscheiuscf.necromenaandanunidentifiedspeciesofthegenusFictor),suggestthatinfestationsofthiskindcouldbenecromenicandeitherhavebeenacontributingfactorforthemassmigrationorbeenaconsequenceofsomanyindividualsoccurringtogetheratcloseproximity.Itisconcludedthatmassmigrationsandaggregationsinmillipedesdonothaveonecommoncause,butrepresentphenomenathatoftenareseasonallyrecurringeventsandappearidenticalintheiroutcome,butwhichhaveevolvedasresponsestodifferentcausesindifferentmillipedetaxaandthereforeneedtobeexaminedonacase-to-casebasis.
