%0 Journal Article %T EffectoffoodrestrictionontheenergymetabolismoftheChinesebulbul(Pycnonotussinensis) %A Qing-Jian LIANG %A Lei ZHAO %A Jia-Qi WANG %A Qian CHEN %A Wei-Hong ZHENG %A Jin-Song LIU %J 动物学研究 %P 79-87 %D 2015 %X Foodresourcesplayanimportantroleintheregulationofanimals'physiologyandbehavior.Weinvestigatedtheeffectofshort-termfoodrestrictiononmetabolicthermogenesisofChinesebulbuls(Pycnonotussinensis)bymeasuringchangesinbodymass,bodyfat,basicmetabolicrate(BMR),andorganmassofwild-caughtChinesebulbulsfromWenzhou,China.Short-termfoodrestrictioninducedasignificantdecreaseinbodymassandbodyfatbutbodymassreturnedtonormallevelssoonafterfoodwasnolongerrestricted.FoodrestrictioncausedasignificantreductioninBMRafter7days(P<0.05),whichreturnedtonormallevelsafterfoodrestrictionceased.LogtotalBMRwaspositivelycorrelatedwithlogbodymass(r2=0.126,P<0.05).Thedrymassesofliversandthedigestivetractwerehigherinbirdsthathadbeensubjecttotemporaryfoodrestrictionthanincontrolbirdsandthosesubjecttocontinualfoodrestriction(P<0.001andP<0.05,respectively).Therewasalsosignificantdifferencesinthedrymassofthelungs(P<0.05),heart(P<0.01),andspleen(P<0.05)inbirdssubjecttoshort-termfoodrestrictioncomparedtocontrolbirdsandthosesubjecttocontinualfoodrestriction.BMRwaspositivelycorrelatedwithbodyandorgan(heart,kidneyandstomach)mass.TheseresultssuggestthattheChinesebulbuladjuststorestrictedfoodavailabilitybyutilizingitsenergyreserves,loweringitsBMRandchangingtheweightofvariousinternalorganssoastobalancetotalenergyrequirements.Thesemayallbesurvivalstrategiesthatallowbirdstocopewithunpredictablevariationinfoodabundance. %K Basicmetabolicrate %K Energymetabolism %K Foodrestriction %K Pycnonotussinensis %U http://www.zoores.ac.cn/CN/abstract/abstract3577.shtml
