%X £¿Aseriesofpyrano[4,3-b]pyranderivativeshavebeensynthesizedinexcellentyieldsbythereactionofaromaticaldehydeswithmalononitrileorcyanoacetateand4-hydroxy-6-methylpyran-2-oneinwaterat80¡æ,withthetransformationbeingcatalyzedbyanaqueoussolutionofthioureadioxide(TUD).Uponcompletionofthereaction,theproductwasisolatedbyfiltrationorextractionandtheremainingaqueousTUDsolutioncouldbereusedseveraltimeswithoutanydiscernibleimpactonitscatalyticactivity.Thisprocedureoffersseveraladvantagesoverexistingprocedures,includinghighyields,operationalsimplicity,theuseofanon-toxiccatalystandsolvent,shortreactiontimeandminimumpollutionoftheenvironment,makingitausefulandattractiveprocessforthepreparationofpyrano[4,3-b]pyranderivatives.
