%X TherearemanyreasonsforinterestinthenorthwesternAdriaticcoastalplain,suchassubsidence,beacherosion,industrialpollution,increasingseasideconurbation,andenviron-mentalpreservation.Theregionasdefinedhasaninnerborderthatisbothamorphologicalandhistoricallimitofpermanentsettlement.Theprogressiveexploitationofthisspacehasdemon-stratedthatitisaregionorganizedintoparallelstripswithhomogeneouscharacteristicsthatco-incidewiththedifferentphasesofthehumanizationofthecoastalarea.However,sincetheSec-ondWorldWar,therehasbeenaremarkabledifferentiation,becauseofreclamation,polarizedindustrialdevelopment,theconstructionofatouristconurbationand,especially,theadminis-trativedivisionoftheentirecoastalstrip,adivisionthatinfluencesthepoliciesofterritorialor-ganization.Thus,todate,thevariouscoastalsubareashavenocommonteleologythatrenderstheentireregionasystemicwhole.
