Particular attention is paid to the atmospheric Cherenkov imaging technique whose employment has resulted in detections of both galactic and extra-galactic objects at energies above 300GeV. Next generation ground-based telescopes promise to increase our knowledge of extreme astrophysical objects as they begin to operate over the next few years. %U http://arxiv.org/abs/astro-ph/0102324v1
