%X El complejo fen車meno de las drogas y de la violencia ha sido agravado por el proceso de la globalizaci車n, que facilita el comercio de 谷stas, el lavado de dinero y el aumento del consumo de drogas entre diferente grupos poblacionales. Como consecuencia, se aumenta la violencia y se cambian las estructura de la familia, las costumbres y los valores sociales. Hay pocos estudios en Latinoam谷rica sobre la relaci車n entre el fen車meno de las drogas y violencia. Los estudios de enfermer赤a sobre el tema se concentran en las drogas l赤citas (tabaco y alcohol), pocos sobre violencia y en relatos de experiencias de intervenci車n. El presente trabajo analiza algunos aspectos relevantes de las investigaciones realizadas y presenta un modelo te車rico alternativo. Dicho modelo utiliza la perspectiva de salud internacional para enfocar el fen車meno de drogas y violencia. Se postula una contribuci車n estrat谷gica de la profesi車n de enfermer赤a en la reducci車n de la demanda de drogas, realzando las herramientas b芍sicas para el avance de la enfermer赤a y el liderazgo en relaci車n al tema en el siglo XXI The phenomenon of drugs and violence is a complex issue aggravated by the globalization process, which facilitates the marketing of drugs, money laundering, and increased demand for drugs among different population groups. As a consequence, violence has increased and there have been changes in family structure, lifestyles, and values in all Latin American countries. Few studies have been done on the relationship between drugs (licit and illicit) and violence. Most nursing studies have focused on licit drugs (tobacco and alcohol), few on violence, and others on results of interventions. The present paper analyzes some of the research in these areas. It also presents an alternative theoretical framework with an international health perspective to study the phenomenon of drugs and violence. It analyzes the CICAD Schools of Nursing project in demand reduction as a case study, and presents a strategy for advancing nursing research and leadership in relation to the drug phenomenon and violence in the XXI Century
