%X Resumo: Neste artigo, tratamos da varia  o lingu¨ªstica entre o pret¨¦rito imperfeito e per¨ªfrases imperfectivas na codifica  o do aspecto habitual em espanhol. Deram suporte a nossa pesquisa, dentre outros, pressupostos do Funcionalismo Lingu¨ªstico (HOPPER & THOMPSON, 1980; GIV¨®N, 1990) e da Teoria da Varia  o e Mudan a (LABOV, 1972). Nossos dados prov¨ºm de vinte e quatro contos escritos por autores de l¨ªngua espanhola, selecionados a partir do parametro comarca cultural: Caribe; M¨¦xico e Am¨¦rica Central; Andes; Rio da Prata; Chile; e Espanha. Obtivemos um total de 126 dados, sendo que 29 desses s o de formas do pret¨¦rito imperfeito do indicativo, 23% do total, e 97 de per¨ªfrases imperfectivas de passado, o que corresponde a 77% do total. Constatamos que, na fun  o habitual, as per¨ªfrases ocorrem, mais frequentemente, motivadas por sujeito agentivo, estilo dos autores Gabriel Garc¨ªa M¨¢rquez e Virgilio Pi era, verbos dinamicos e durativos e presen a de modificador aspectual. Abstract: In this article, we deal with the linguistic variation between the imperfect past tense and imperfective periphrases in the encoding of habitual aspect in Spanish. As theoretical backgrounds, among others, we used Linguistic Functionalism (HOPPER & THOMPSON, 1980; GIV¨®N, 1990) and Variation and Change Theory (LABOV, 1972). Our data comes from twenty four short stories written by Spanish language writers, selected based on the cultural region parameter: Caribe; Mexico and Central America; Andes, Rio da Prata; Chile; and Spain. It was obtained a total of 126 data: 29 of them are imperfect past tense of indicative forms, that is, 23% of the total, and 97 are imperfective periphrasis of past, that is, 77% of the total. In the habitual function it was found that periphrasis occur more frequently, motivated by agentive subject, the style of the writers Gabriel Garc¨ªa M¨¢rquez and Virgilio Pi era, dynamic and durative verbs and the presence of the aspectual modifier.
