%X English Longitudinal data consist of time-sequences of measurements, counts orcategorical responses from the same experimental units. Thus, they have a distinct advantage overcross-sectional data in that they provide us the information on both stability and change. It isrecommended therefore that any longitudinal study should tap this information through availabletechniques. In social science research, the use of categorical and binary responses is more frequentthan the use of continuous-time responses. This paper aims to show that more detailed andsophisticated analysis can be done even with categorical and binary sequences collected throughlongitudinal surveys. After proposing two paradigms that may be used in the explanations of stabilityand change, the paper presents two illustrations for the analysis of categorical and binarysequences. French Les donn¨¦es longitudinales se composent de mesures ordonn¨¦es dans le temps, soitdes comptes ou des r¨¦ponses cat¨¦goriques ¨¤ partir des m¨ºmes unit¨¦s d'exp¨¦rience.Ainsi, elles ont un avantage distinct par rapport aux donn¨¦es transversaux du faitqu=elles nous fournissent les informations sur la stabilit¨¦ et le changement. Onrecommande donc que n'importe quelle ¨¦tude longitudinale devrait inclure cetteinformation par des techniques disponibles. Dans la recherche en scienceshumaines, l'utilisation des r¨¦ponses cat¨¦goriques et binaires est plus fr¨¦quente quel'utilisation des r¨¦ponses continues dans le temps. Cet article vise ¨¤ d¨¦montrerqu'une analyse plus d¨¦taill¨¦e et plus sophistiqu¨¦e peut ¨ºtre faite m¨ºme avec desdonn¨¦es cat¨¦goriques et binaires ordonn¨¦es dans le temps. Apr¨¨s avoir proposerdeux paradigmes qui peuvent ¨ºtre utilis¨¦s dans les explications de la stabilit¨¦ et duchangement, le papier pr¨¦sente deux illustrations pour l'analyse des donn¨¦esordonn¨¦es, soit cat¨¦goriques ou binaires.
