Every year thousands of aliens under irregular situation are arrested in France but cannot be removed as the administration is not able to reassemble the basic elements needed for a deportation. Aliens are then released after a detention period where they experience police interaction and coercion. Based on an ethnographical fieldwork in a retention place and among the aliens that have been released on French territory, my aim here is to analyze how this device transforms the image aliens have of themselves (from the alien that thinks he/she is legitimate to the alien that knows he/she is illegal). This device also confines aliens to the use of illicit in order to stay in France. Far from any possibility of regularize their administrative situation, these undocumented are reduced to the status of clandestine. %K detention %K illegal aliens %K coercion tools %K r¨¦tention administrative %K ¨¦trangers en situation irr¨¦guli¨¨re %K instruments de coercition %K France %K XXe s. %K XXIe s. %U http://champpenal.revues.org/7889
