%X This essay uses my students¡¯ visit to the Los Angeles River and their written reflections on it as a narrative context for examining literary and filmic representations of the LA River. My larger goal is to illustrate the connection between these representations and the Los Angeles River¡¯s various physical transformations and, in so doing, to underscore the relationship between a site¡¯s storytelling traditions and its ecological degradation and/or preservation.
